Each night, when the hours of painting and drawing were over, Vincent van Gogh put pen to paper and poured out his heart through letters to his beloved brother, Theo, his confidant and companion. No thought was too small, no element of his craft too insignificant, no happening too trivial. It was all scrupulously recorded and shared.

In these letters, Van Gogh reveals himself as artist and man. Even more than if he had purposely intended to tell his life story, Van Gogh's letters lay bare his deepest feelings, as well as his everyday concerns and his views of the world of art. Irving Stone has edited the letters of Vincent in such a way as to retain every line of beauty, significance, and importance. "It is my humble opinion that Vincent was as great a writer and philosopher," Stone says, "as he was a painter."

It is a lovely book. Not one I read cover to cover - no need, they are letters - not a story. The letters combined do tell a story so I will pick up and read on occasion to understand the changes The Artist was going through.

Dear Theo The Autobiography of Vincent van Gogh (Audible Audio Edition) Irving Stone Jean Stone Clive Chafer Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews

The edges were a little bent and I'm not sure if it's this company or all publishing of this book, but the text is thick And some looks kind of smeared on almost every other page. Is still readable but I just wasn't expecting that I guess. Anyway, good book. A nice read he lived an intriguing and sad life
I got the audio version and found it easier to listen to than to read the letters. you can listen to a sample on this page.
The paper quality of this book is very poor, and affected the prints in half of the book- making the prints blurred and hard to read! So much so that I thought I was having problems with my eye, and asked others with good eyesight to check the book! They also confirmed that it was the paper and prints!!
This is a wonderful book of letters that Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo between the years 1873 and 1890. They had been found by Theo's wife after his passing - which was only 6 months after Van Gogh's death. He was as much a philosopher as he was a painter. In a sense thro these letters he is telling us the story of his own life. Bringing to us his sense of beauty and the understanding of the people he met, and places he lived. He has a way with words, once you get used to the older style you find yourself being drawn in. It is not a book to read quickly in one sitting as I found myself sitting back every once in a while to ponder what I had just read - I think you will too. It does make me miss the art of letter writing in this day and age of facebook and twitter.
It is not as easy a read as Stone's van Gog biography Lust For Life, but for fans, it's a deep book.

Vincent tells of how he went into the fields to paint, and then a rain storm came. He sought meager shelter behind a big tree while it lasted, and then resumed. And because he had started with a low vantage point, he now had to stand on his knees in the mud! He seems to merely mention this to point out why he considers common workman's clothes to be the artist's best friend...

He also tells how he went out to paint the sea, in a storm so strong he could barely stay on his feet. One painting got so full of sand from the beach that he went to a nearby inn and retouched it... and then went back out into the storm to finish it with fresh impressions!

Today, most of us "Go out with the camera today? Nah, it's a bit nippy, and I just got the Sopranos on DVD..."

Irving Stone edited Dear Theo, and while he may have done a good job generally, I think it was a disservice to the material to not indicate where he cut it. It is just one long text, no dates and no indication where each quote starts or ends.
I could not put the book down. The editing could have been a lot better when it came to when Van Gogh wrote each letter to his brother. I enjoyed googling the names of artists that were Van Gogh's favorites and learning about their styles that inspired him.
Vincent's letter is of course 5 stars. This edition by A PLUME BOOK is disgraceful. I's not a paperback. It's a mass market paperback. The printing and paper quality are worse than those of a newspaper. If you love Van Gogh's letter, it's free online. If you enjoy reading on paper, get a different edition.
It is a lovely book. Not one I read cover to cover - no need, they are letters - not a story. The letters combined do tell a story so I will pick up and read on occasion to understand the changes The Artist was going through.
